Mumbai: After a ‘cyber attack' put a halt on the online exams of its distance learning students, the University of Mumbai (MU) is considering to stagger the tests across various time slots.

The University may divide the final year and backlog students at its Institute of Distance Learning (IDOL) in small batches, organise them through WhatsApp groups and conduct their tests in separate time slots. The University is also planning to outsource some of the tests to its affiliated colleges.

'We are exploring various possibilities to conduct the exam without any glitch. We will finalise our plan in a day or two. No student will be deprived of the test,' said Vinod Malale, Public Relations Officer at IDOL.
The university put off IDOL exams until October 19, after a technical snag prevented students from taking the tests on Tuesday and Wednesday (October 6 and 7). The university blamed the snafu on a ‘cyber-attack' on the servers of its Singapore-based IT service provider. While a new time-table is yet to be issued, IDOL is hopeful of wrapping up the tests by October 30.

Malale said that the university is planning to adopt a ‘target-based' approach for the rescheduled tests, where the problems faced by individual students can be identified and resolved. 'Suppose we conduct a mock test for a batch of 250 students, out of which 50 are not able to take the tests. We can contact them and find out why they missed the test and offer them a solution. For example, if a student doesn't have a smartphone, we can ask him to take the test in a nearby college,' he said.

The University is seeking the help of the colleges that are done with their own exams. 'We can provide them with the data of some of the students and ask them to conduct their tests,' said Malale.
The University has also sent a letter to the cyber cell of Mumbai police, asking for a probe into the alleged cyber attack. 'The service provider tells us that it didn't face any issue during several backlog exams. However, during the regular exams, it appeared that number of users that were trying to login for the tests was much higher than the actual number of students registered for the exam, which is in mere thousands,' said the IDOL PRO.
